Tip Calculator

Calculate a tip amount and split the total bill between multiple people.

So funktioniert's

This calculator answers three things at once: how much to tip, what the total bill comes to, and how much each person owes if you're splitting it.

The math is simple but easy to get slightly wrong by hand: tip = bill × (tip percentage Ă· 100), total = bill + tip, and per-person share = total Ă· number of people. For a $64 bill with an 18% tip split four ways: tip = $11.52, total = $75.52, and each person pays $18.88.

Tipping norms vary a lot by country and even by service type. In the US, 15–20% is standard for full-service restaurants, often more for exceptional service and less (or nothing) for counter service. In many other countries, service is already included in the price or a small rounding-up is the norm rather than a percentage — check local customs when traveling.

One common debate: tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically the more traditional approach (since tax isn't part of the service you're rewarding), but tipping on the total is common in practice and only changes the tip by a small amount either way.

This calculator splits the bill evenly by default. If your group wants to split unevenly — say, one person ordered drinks and others didn't — calculate each person's own subtotal, apply the same tip percentage to each, and skip the even split.

Tipping conventions extend well beyond restaurants: hairdressers and barbers, taxi and rideshare drivers, hotel housekeeping, and food delivery all have their own norms, typically somewhat lower than the 15–20% full-service restaurant standard — often 10–15% or a flat few dollars rather than a percentage at all. When in doubt for a specific service, a quick search for local convention beats guessing.

In larger groups, some parties prefer to add an automatic gratuity or split the tip as a fixed amount per person rather than a percentage, especially when orders are wildly uneven — a flat, agreed-upon amount avoids the awkwardness of everyone doing separate math at the table.

What's a typical tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is common for restaurant service; adjust for your local norms.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more traditional approach, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience — the difference is usually small.

How do I split a bill unevenly among people?

Calculate each person's individual subtotal, then apply the same tip percentage to each person's amount separately rather than using this calculator's even split.

Is tipping customary outside the US?

It varies widely — some countries build service into menu prices and tipping is rare or a small rounding-up; others follow a percentage system closer to US norms. It's worth checking local customs before traveling.

What's a good tip for exceptional or poor service?

Many people tip above 20% for outstanding service and closer to 10–15% (rather than skipping entirely) for service that was merely unsatisfactory, reserving $0 for genuinely poor situations worth raising with staff or management.

Does this calculator round the total for easier cash payment?

No — it shows the exact calculated amounts. Round up manually if you're paying cash and want to avoid small change.

Should delivery tips be calculated differently than sit-down service?

Norms differ — delivery tips are often a smaller flat percentage or a flat dollar amount reflecting a shorter interaction, while sit-down service typically follows the fuller 15–20% convention.

What's a typical tip for services other than restaurants?

Hairdressers, taxi/rideshare drivers, and hotel staff are commonly tipped 10–20% or a small flat amount, generally on the lower end of restaurant norms — conventions vary by service and region.

Is it better to tip a flat amount or a percentage in a large group?

Either works, but a flat per-person amount can be simpler and avoids friction when order sizes vary a lot within the group — percentage-based tipping is more common when everyone ordered roughly similar amounts.

Does this calculator work for currencies other than dollars?

Yes — it's currency-agnostic. Enter your bill in whatever currency you're using; the tip percentage math works identically regardless of what currency symbol you have in mind.
